Bloemfontein Airport was opened in November 1961 by the then State President, Mr CR Swart. The runways were completed before the terminal buildings so that the South African Air Force could make use of them. The runways are shared with AFB Bloemspruit. The airport handles an average of 8.000 air traffic movements per year which include international, domestic, non-schedule and training from domestic airlines SA Express and SA Airlink, which bring some 230 000 passengers through its doors each year, too. Some 220 000 tons of cargo, primarily courier items and spare parts for machinery and factories, leave the airport, destined for Johannesburg and other South African cities.
