2. PONTE CITY APARTMENTS

Johannesburg
Pinnacle Height         173 m
Number of Floors       54
Year Constructed      1975

Ponte is the tallest residential building on the African continent. The 54-story building is cylindrical, with an open center allowing additional light into the apartments. The center space is known as “the core” and rises above an uneven rock floor. The building is not completely cylindrical as it has a flat area on the rear side facing north. The top 23 floors have a separate water supply located in tanks on the 31st floor and while lower floors are serviced by council supply. Due to urban decay and downgrading of the city, the building is now derelict and is no longer exclusive high-end accommodation. Some of the floors look like they have been trampled by a giant over the years.
