8 KWADUKUZA EGOLI TOWER

8 KWADUKUZA EGOLI TOWER

Johannesburg
Pinnacle Height         140m
Number of Floors        40
Year Constructed        1970

The year was 1970 and this was the first great work of the age of the skyscraper  –  the first instance when all of South Africa’s perspective could be presented with a single point of view. The view from the top of the Tollman Tower.  This building was completed in 1970, owned by Stanley Tollman, a renowned South African hotelier.  In the late 1980s businesses abandoned the Johannesburg CBD in favour of the more affluent northern part of town, leaving many buildings derelict. After many years on the inactive list, the building was converted to a holiday inn, which turned out to be a failed venture.  The KwaDukuza eGoli Hotel opened in 2001, and that also went out of business. The building is currently “mothballed.”
