9. NELSON MANDELA BAY
Capacity: 48 459
Year completed: 2009
The five-tier Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium is the first and so far only large scale football facility in the Eastern Cape, as under apartheid, football was not catered for in this province.
The stadium which was built overlooking the North End Lake at the heart of the city had cost approximately R2 billion upon its completion in 2009.
Nicknamed the ‘sunflower’, the stadium has a roof that is made up of a series of ‘petals’ that make it look like a flower. The main architecture was handled by Architectural Design Associates (Pty) Ltd and Dominic Bonnesse Architects.
