5. MOSES MABHIDA

5. MOSES MABHIDA

Durban

Capacity: 54 000

Year completed: 2009

This could easily be the mascot of South Africa’s stadium. It represents the beauty and majesty of these colossal facilities. This state-of-the-art stadium is easily recognizable for its 350m long high-span arch that holds its roof. The top arch, which is reminiscent of the famous Wembley Stadium, rises to 106m above the pitch. The stadium is built on the site of the old Kings Park Soccer Stadium, which was demolished in 2006 using 126kg of explosives. The multi-purpose venue includes an indoor arena, football museum, sports institute and a transport hub. The design allows the stadium seating to be adjusted; 54 000 for local football matches or up to 80 000 for big events like the Olympics Games or the World Cup. The stadium is named after Moses Mabhida, a former general secretary of the South African Communist Party.
