2. ELLIS PARK

2. ELLIS PARK

Johannesburg

Capacity: 62 567

Year completed: 1928

The stadium was named after J.D. Ellis, who had made the area available for the stadium to be built in the 1920s. Ellis Park was the country’s most modern when it was upgraded in 1982. The stadium was refurbished by Rainbow Construction at the tune of R81-million for the 2010 FIFA World Cup in 2010. This facility will forever be remembered for hosting that landmark Springbok victory over the All Blacks in the 1995 Rugby World Cup. On a tragic note, this was also the piece of ground where 43 football spectators perished during a stampede during a game between Orlando Pirates (stadium tenants) and Kaizer Chiefs in 2001.
