7. LOFTUS VERSVELD

7. LOFTUS VERSVELD

Pretoria

Capacity: 51 762

Year completed: 1924

This is the biggest stadium that the nation’s capital is able to contribute to the top 9 list or even the top 19. Loftus Versveld, whose ground experts proclaim has a British feel, is dear to the hearts of South African rugby fans. This is the slaughter house where any rugby team that enters to play the Blue Bulls gets demolished. It is named after Robert Owen Loftus Versfeld, the founder of organized sports in Pretoria. Other than rugby, memorable events that have been held at the stadium include the much-publicised 1979 heavyweight championship fight between Gerrie Coetzee and John Tate; sold-out music concerts by Robbie Williams, UB40 and Celine Dion, as well as a number of Soccer World Cup 2010 games.
