In 1957 the South African government moved black people from their homes in areas around Alexandra, Edenvale, Kempton Park, Midrand and Germiston. The governmrnt officials found a place for them in the mid-eastern part of Johannesburg. Tembisa is a Xhosa word meaning ‘promise’. When the township was created it was a beacon of hope for those who were suddenly homeless.
