4. JAGERSFONTEIN MINE
Jagersfontein Mine was discovered in 1870 and closed in 1971, less than a year after the centenary of the first diamond discovery in the area. The 972 carats Excelsior Diamond is the largest found at the Jagersfontein Mine. Research by historian Steve Lunderstedt in 2005 confirmed that the mine was the biggest hand-excavated hole in the world, slightly larger than the Big Hole, which had claimed the title up to then.
