This township came about when the South African government elected to build sixteen houses on Vlakfontein farm, outside Pretoria, between 1945 and 1953. The area was soon designated a blacks-only dwelling by the Group Areas Act and was named Mamelodi. The township saw a larger influx and a phenomenal population growth in the 1960s when it accepted citizens of Lady Selbourne who had been forcefully removed from that suburb.
