8. MITCHELLS PLAIN
Thirty minutes from the city of Cape Town, on the False Bay coast between Muizenberg and Khayelitsha, lies the only “coloured” township that features on this list. Mitchells Plain was established in 1970 as a model ‘dormitory suburb’ with the aim of alleviating the housing shortages in the city’s coloured community. The 56 original dwellings were built on a standard box-like design and laid out in neat rows with wide roads between them.
