The N1 is a portion of the lengthy Pan African Highway from Cape Town in South Africa and Cairo in Egypt. The South African section of the road is the country’s second longest. It is one of the busiest national roads as it connects five of the nine South African provinces. The N1 briefly crosses into the Northeren Cape at Three Sisters for a few kilometres before crossing back into the Western cape, and remains in the Western Cape until just after its intersection with the R63, where it re-enters the Northern Cape. Not far from the Gariep Dam in the Free State, the N1 crosses the Orange River and then makes a direct line for Bloemfontein. After crossing the Vaal River, the N1 continues towards Johannesburg in Gauteng. Bela Bela is the first Limpopo town the N1 encounters. After Polokwane it heads heads north, crossing the Tropic of Capricorn before passing Louis Trichardt and then winding through the Soutpanesberg Mountains. Next stop is Musina, from which it is a sixteen-kilometre drive to the Beitbridge border into Zimbabwe.
