GEORGE – WITBANK

The N12 is birthed just outside the Garden Route Mall in the coastal town of George (Eastern Cape) and then makes its way inland. This road has a habit of interfacing with other national roads for long distances, which might cause confusion for travellers. Soon after leaving George, it adjoins the Colesberg-bound N9. The two national roads part ways in the mountains of Holgate.
The N12 crosses the Olifantsrivier in Oudtshoorn and then makes a sharp right turn towards Beaufort West. For 81,2 kilometres, the N12 and the N1 interface between the towns of Beaufort West and Three Sisters. The next big town is Kimberly in the Northern Cape. The highlight of its journey through the Northern West province is on the Free State border where the Vaal River pours into the Bloemhof Dam, one of South Africa’s largest dams.
